energimoment

Energimoment is a term used in energy analytics to describe a time-weighted measure of energy transfer within an electrical or thermal system. Conceptually, it combines the notion of energy with timing, and is intended to convey when energy flows occur in relation to a reference point within a defined interval.

In a defined interval [t1, t2], the zeroth moment M0 corresponds to the total energy exchanged, M0 = ∫ P(t) dt. The first moment, the energimoment M1 = ∫ (t − t0) P(t) dt, where t0 is a chosen reference time, describes the temporal distribution of energy transfer. A negative M1 indicates net energy flow earlier in the interval relative to t0, while a positive M1 indicates later energy transfer. Higher-order moments can describe the variability of the energy signal.

Energimoment is used to evaluate dispatch strategies for energy storage, to optimize demand-side management, and to assess the timing characteristics of renewable generation or industrial processes. By comparing energimoment values across scenarios, operators can align storage charging or discharging and load shifting with periods of high demand or favorable market conditions.

The term emerged in energy systems literature in the 2010s and remains informal; there is no universal standard definition, and different authors may choose different reference times and interval bounds.
