Energiemeters are devices that measure the amount of electrical energy consumed by a circuit, device, or building over time. The most common output is energy usage in kilowatt-hours (kWh). Modern meters also report electrical parameters such as voltage, current, power factor, and peak demand, and may connect to a data network for remote readouts.

Meter types range from traditional electromechanical meters with a spinning disk to electronic meters that use digital sampling. Submeters measure individual circuits within a facility. In energy systems with distributed generation, bidirectional meters can record energy flow in both directions. Smart meters provide two-way communication, real-time data, and often support time-of-use or demand-based pricing.

Energiemeters determine active energy by measuring instantaneous power (P = V × I) and integrating over time. Reactive energy may be recorded as well. Electronic meters sample at high frequency, perform calculations, and store interval data. Communication technologies such as power line carrier, radio, or cellular interfaces enable remote reading and data management for utilities and energy managers.

Industry standards define accuracy and data formats. Common references include IEC 62053 for static meters and IEC 62056 (DLMS/COSEM) for data exchange. Metering accuracy is expressed in classes (for example 1.0 or 2.0), indicating allowable error. The deployment of smart meters supports dynamic pricing, load management, and improved outage detection, but also raises considerations around privacy and cybersecurity.
