Endnotes are notes that appear at the end of a document or a designated section rather than at the bottom of each page. They serve to provide bibliographic citations, explanatory remarks, or supplementary information without interrupting the flow of the main text. In scholarly works, endnotes are often used in lieu of footnotes, though they can coexist with a bibliography; the notes themselves may contain full citations or shortened references, depending on the citation style.

Endnotes are typically numbered consecutively and linked to corresponding superscripts or markers in the text. The placement can be at the end of chapters or at the end of the entire work, depending on guidelines. Common styles that employ endnotes include Chicago Notes and Bibliography, and, in practice, many journals and editors require endnotes to keep pages uncluttered.

Formatting and insertion are supported by word processors (for example, Word, LibreOffice) via an Endnotes feature that automatically numbers and aggregates notes. Writers should ensure consistency: choose one system, either full citations in the notes with a separate bibliography, or shortened notes paired with a bibliography. Endnotes are useful for lengthy cross-references or clarifications that would distract readers if placed in the main text.

In Finnish academic writing, endnotes are often referred to as loppuviitteet, and the general concept is similar across languages: notes gathered at the end of the work rather than on individual pages.
