endemikus

Endemikus is a term used in several languages to describe endemism: the condition in which a species or other taxon is native to and restricted to a defined geographic area. An endemic organism is found only in that area and nowhere else in the world. Endemism can apply to species, subspecies, or higher taxonomic groups, and it can occur at many scales, from entire regions to islands and isolated habitats such as mountains or basins.

Endemism arises through long-term geographic isolation, ecological specialization, and historical factors. Islands typically show high endemism due to isolation, but continental regions with unique habitats—such as high mountains, deserts, or ancient refugia—also harbor endemic lineages. Endemics are often classified by range: true endemics restricted to a single area; regional endemics confined to a defined region. Subtypes include paleoendemics (relict species) and neoendemics (recently evolved endemics).

Examples commonly cited include Madagascar’s lemurs, the Komodo dragon and other fauna of Komodo Island, and many plant species in the Cape Floristic Region of South Africa. Endemism is particularly prevalent on islands, mountains, and isolated ecosystems, where opportunities for dispersal are limited and evolutionary processes generate unique adaptations.

Because of restricted distributions, endemic taxa are often highly vulnerable to extinction from habitat loss, invasive species, climate change, and stochastic events. Conservation implications include protecting key habitats, controlling invasive species, and sometimes implementing ex situ programs or protected-area networks to preserve endemic lineages.
