An electronic logbook, or elogbook, is a digital system for recording activities that would traditionally be logged in a physical notebook. Elogbooks are used in many fields, including aviation, maritime, military, medicine, and scientific research, to document training, flight time, maintenance, experiments, or service events. They typically store entries with time stamps, identifiers, and metadata, and support search, export, and reporting. Many systems provide audit trails, user authentication, data backup, version history, and tamper-evident records to meet regulatory or organizational requirements.

Entries may include date, duration, location, involved asset (aircraft, vessel, instrument), activity type, and notes. In aviation, electronic flight logs track flight hours, landings, currency, endorsements, and maintenance references; authorities may accept e-logbooks as substitutes for paper logs when they meet standards for integrity and security. In labs, electronic lab notebooks (ELNs) serve a related function, organizing experiments, observations, and results.

Advantages of elogbooks include improved accuracy, easier sharing and collaboration, automatic calculations and reminders, and robust backups. Challenges include ensuring data security and privacy, avoiding vendor lock-in, and maintaining regulatory compliance across jurisdictions. Users should consider portability, offline access, data export options, and interoperability with other systems when selecting an elogbook solution.
