Ellensúlyos is a Hungarian term that translates to "counterweight" in English. It refers to a mass used to balance or counteract a force or weight. This principle is applied in various mechanical systems to achieve stability, control movement, or facilitate lifting.

In engineering, counterweights are commonly found in cranes and elevators. A crane uses a heavy counterweight to stabilize its boom and prevent it from tipping over when lifting a load. Similarly, elevators employ counterweights that are roughly equal in mass to the elevator car and its maximum load. This counterweight system reduces the energy required by the motor to move the car up or down, as the motor primarily needs to overcome the difference in weight between the car and the counterweight.

The concept of counterweights also extends to simpler mechanisms. For instance, a see-saw relies on the principle of leverage and balanced weights at either end for its operation. In some types of pendulum clocks, a counterweight is used to drive the clock's mechanism. The potential energy stored in the elevated counterweight is gradually converted into kinetic energy, powering the gears and maintaining the pendulum's swing.
