The notion of an elite is not a modern invention; hierarchical social structures have existed throughout history, and with them, the idea of a ruling or privileged class.

Sociologists and political scientists have extensively studied elite theory, exploring how elites are formed, maintained, and how they influence societal development. Different theories exist regarding the nature of elites. Some, like the Marxist view, emphasize the role of economic power in shaping elite dominance. Others, such as the pluralist perspective, suggest that power is more dispersed among various groups, and no single elite holds absolute control. Elite circles often possess distinct cultural markers, social networks, and access to resources that differentiate them from the broader population. The presence and influence of elites are often debated, with discussions often centering on issues of fairness, representation, and the potential for social mobility. The term "elite" can carry both positive connotations, suggesting excellence and leadership, and negative ones, implying exclusivity and detachment from ordinary people.
