Elfe, also known as elves, are mythical creatures that appear in the folklore of Germanic and Norse cultures. They are often depicted as having supernatural abilities, being closely connected to nature, and possessing a long lifespan or immortality. Descriptions of elves vary significantly across different traditions and historical periods.

In early Germanic mythology, elves were often perceived as divine beings or spirits associated with fertility, nature, and the dead. They could be benevolent, bestowing blessings and good fortune, or malevolent, causing illness and misfortune. Later, particularly in medieval literature, elves began to be portrayed as smaller, more mischievous beings, sometimes akin to fairies.

Norse mythology presents elves as a distinct race, often divided into light elves (Ljósálfar) and dark elves (Dökkálfar). The light elves were beautiful beings residing in Álfheimr, a celestial realm, while the dark elves lived underground and were often associated with black elves or dwarves. These figures played roles in various myths and sagas, interacting with gods and humans.

The concept of elves has evolved considerably over time, influencing modern fantasy literature and popular culture. While retaining some of their ancient attributes, contemporary portrayals often emphasize their grace, magical prowess, and connection to the natural world, frequently depicting them as tall, slender humanoids with pointed ears and exceptional archery skills.
