Elektronmuusika, also known as electronic music, is a broad genre of music that primarily uses electronic musical instruments, digital instruments, and circuitry-based music technology. The history of elektronmuusika can be traced back to the early 20th century with the invention of instruments like the Theremin and the Ondes Martenot.

Significant developments in the mid-20th century, such as the creation of tape recorders and early synthesizers like the RCA Mark II, paved the way for more complex electronic compositions. Studios like the Studio for Electronic Music at WDR in Cologne and the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center were crucial in the development of early electronic music. Composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen and Milton Babbitt experimented with these new technologies.

The advent of affordable and accessible synthesizers in the 1970s and 1980s led to the explosion of various elektronmuusika subgenres, including disco, synth-pop, house, techno, and ambient music.
