Elektrondensiteet, also known as electron density, refers to the measure of the probability of finding an electron in a specific region of space. In quantum mechanics, electrons are not considered to be point-like particles with definite positions, but rather exist as wave functions. The square of the magnitude of this wave function at a given point in space is directly proportional to the electron density at that point.

This concept is fundamental to understanding atomic and molecular structure. In atoms, electron density is distributed in orbitals, which describe the regions where electrons are most likely to be found. Different orbitals (s, p, d, f) have distinct shapes and energy levels, and thus, different electron density distributions.
