This process is performed using a specialized instrument called an electrosurgical generator, which produces the electrical current, and an active electrode, which is applied to the tissue. A return electrode pad is also used to complete the electrical circuit.

The primary applications of elektrokirurgia are in surgical procedures to achieve precise tissue cutting, remove unwanted growths, and control bleeding. The high-frequency current generates heat within the tissue, leading to either vaporization of cells (cutting) or denaturation of proteins and cell membranes (coagulation).
