Elektrivõimsus is the Estonian term for electrical power. It is the rate at which electrical energy is transferred or used. The standard unit of electrical power in the International System of Units (SI) is the watt, symbolized by W. One watt is equivalent to one joule of energy per second.

In direct current (DC) circuits, electrical power is calculated by multiplying the voltage across a component by the current flowing through it. The formula is P = V * I, where P represents power, V represents voltage, and I represents current. For example, if a 12-volt battery supplies a current of 2 amperes to a device, the power consumed by the device is 12 volts * 2 amperes = 24 watts.

In alternating current (AC) circuits, the calculation is slightly more complex due to the fluctuating nature of voltage and current. For purely resistive loads, the power is still the product of the root-mean-square (RMS) voltage and RMS current. However, in circuits with reactive components like capacitors and inductors, there is a phase difference between voltage and current. This leads to the concept of apparent power (measured in volt-amperes, VA) and reactive power (measured in volt-amperes reactive, VAR), in addition to the real power (measured in watts) that does actual work. The relationship is often described using a power triangle.

Understanding elektrivõimsus is crucial for designing electrical systems, determining energy consumption, and ensuring the efficient use of electricity in homes, industries, and electronic devices. It helps in selecting appropriate power sources, cables, and components that can handle the required power levels without overheating or malfunctioning.
