Electricstart refers to a method of starting an internal combustion engine using an electric motor rather than manual cranking. It is widely used in automobiles, motorcycles, lawn equipment, aircraft, and other devices with small to large engines. A typical electric starting system includes a rechargeable battery, a starter motor, a solenoid or relay, and wiring connected to the ignition switch. When the operator activates the start control, current flows to the solenoid, which engages the starter drive with the engine’s flywheel and rotates the crankshaft. Once the engine fires and runs, the starter disengages automatically.

The concept originated in the early 20th century, with the first practical automotive electric starter announced by Cadillac in 1912 and developed by Charles F. Kettering’s Delco-Remy team. Electric starters gradually replaced hand cranks in most vehicles, enabling safer, more convenient starting and enabling other electrical systems to be used while the engine is off.

Advantages include ease of starting, especially for large or cold engines, improved reliability in various conditions, and reduced physical effort. Limitations include dependence on the vehicle’s electrical system and battery health, higher maintenance costs, and occasional risk of kickback or gear wear if the engine is flooded or if the starter is engaged while the engine is turning.

In modern practice, many starters use reduction gearing to increase torque and reduce current draw, and some systems incorporate safety interlocks and smart controls to prevent damage.
