Elavhõbedaga, also known as mercury poisoning, is a condition caused by exposure to mercury or its compounds. Mercury is a heavy metal that can accumulate in the body and cause a range of health problems. There are three main forms of mercury: elemental mercury, inorganic mercury salts, and organic mercury compounds.

Elemental mercury is found in thermometers and some electrical switches. Inhalation of elemental mercury vapor is the most common route of exposure and can lead to neurological symptoms such as tremors, memory loss, and behavioral changes. Inorganic mercury salts are often found in disinfectants and some older dental amalgams. Ingestion or skin contact can cause digestive issues and kidney damage.

Organic mercury compounds, particularly methylmercury, are the most toxic form and are often found in contaminated fish. When ingested, methylmercury can readily cross the blood-brain barrier and the placenta, posing a significant risk to the developing nervous system. Symptoms of organic mercury poisoning can include sensory disturbances (numbness, tingling), coordination problems, vision and hearing impairment, and in severe cases, paralysis and death.

The severity of elavhõbedaga depends on the type of mercury, the dose, the duration of exposure, and the individual's susceptibility. Diagnosis is typically made through blood or urine tests measuring mercury levels. Treatment focuses on removing the source of exposure and, in some cases, chelation therapy to help the body excrete mercury. Prevention is key and involves avoiding exposure to mercury-containing products and consuming fish from clean sources.
