Elastisuus, or elasticity, is the property of a material to deform when a force is applied and to return to its original shape when the force is removed. In Finnish, the possessive form elastisuutensa means “its elasticity” and is used to attribute elasticity to a specific object or material, for example kappaleen elastisuutensa.

In physics and engineering, elasticity is described quantitatively by elastic moduli, such as Young’s modulus, the shear modulus, and the bulk modulus. These constants relate stress to strain in reversible deformation, as described by the linear elastic region and Hooke’s law. The elastic limit or yield point marks the boundary beyond which deformation becomes plastic and not fully recoverable.

Materials differ in stiffness and elasticity. Substances with high elastic moduli, like steel or ceramics, are stiff and resist deformation, while polymers and rubbers have lower moduli and can undergo larger reversible strains. Viscoelastic materials combine elastic and viscous responses, causing time-dependent deformation and energy dissipation, visible as damping and hysteresis in stress–strain curves.

Elastisuutensa is a central consideration in design and analysis across fields such as engineering, construction, automotive, and biomechanics. Designers assess a component’s elastisuutensa to ensure it can withstand loads without permanent deformation. In biology, elasticity of tissues such as skin, ligaments, and arteries influences function and aging. In Finnish usage, elastisuutensa illustrates how the possessive suffix -nsä attaches to elastisuus to express “its elasticity.”
