An ejection system is a safety device found in aircraft, primarily military and some high-performance civilian planes, designed to safely remove the pilot and crew from a disabled aircraft at high speed and altitude. The core principle involves using explosive charges to propel a seat, with the occupant strapped in, clear of the aircraft structure. The ejection sequence is typically initiated by a handle, often located in front of the pilot or between crew members.

Upon activation, the system first jettisons the canopy or a portion of it to create a clear path. Simultaneously, explosive charges are fired. These charges power a rocket motor attached to the seat, thrusting it upwards and outwards. As the seat ascends, a series of mechanisms deploy to ensure the occupant's safety. This often includes a drogue parachute to stabilize and slow the seat, followed by the main parachute for a safe landing. Modern ejection systems are highly complex, with integrated survival equipment and sophisticated sequencing to adapt to various flight conditions. They are a critical component of aviation safety, significantly increasing survival rates in catastrophic aircraft failures.
