Eipositiolukujärjestelmiin, often translated as positional numeral systems, refers to a mathematical system where the value of a digit is determined by its position within a number. Unlike non-positional systems, such as Roman numerals, where each symbol has a fixed value regardless of its placement, in positional systems, the same digit can represent different quantities depending on where it appears. This concept is fundamental to most modern number representations.

The most common example is the decimal system (base-10), which we use daily. In this system, the digits 0 through 9 are employed, and each position represents a power of 10. For instance, in the number 234, the '4' is in the units place (10^0), the '3' is in the tens place (10^1), and the '2' is in the hundreds place (10^2). Therefore, 234 is equal to 2 * 100 + 3 * 10 + 4 * 1.

Other positional systems exist, such as the binary system (base-2), used extensively in computing, which only uses digits 0 and 1, and the hexadecimal system (base-16), which uses digits 0-9 and letters A-F. The core principle remains the same: the position of a digit dictates its value, which is multiplied by the base raised to the power corresponding to that position. This positional nature allows for efficient representation of very large and very small numbers using a limited set of digits.
