Eierlegend is a term used in folklore studies to describe a class of legends in which an egg functions as a central symbol of creation, renewal, or cosmology. The word is formed from ei, the Germanic word for egg, and legend, and is used to categorize motifs rather than to refer to a single narrative. While not tied to one tradition, eierlegends appear across Northern and Eastern Europe in diverse forms.

Common motifs include a cosmic egg from which the world or life emerges; eggs linked to fertility, spring, and seasonal cycles; and figures such as goddesses, earth spirits, or primal beings who lay, guard, or crack the egg to birth the cosmos. In many variations the egg's cracking marks a moment of transformation, giving rise to land, the sun, or humanity. Eggs are often depicted as delicate yet powerful carriers of potential, capable of containing multiple realms within a single shell.

Culturally, eierlegend narratives are associated with springtime rituals, fertility rites, and symbolic acts involving eggs, such as decoration, exchange, or games.
