An efoil, short for electric hydrofoil board, is a personal watercraft that blends a hydrofoil beneath the hull with a battery-powered electric motor. The rider stands on a board while a foil wing and mast generate lift, rising the board above the water as speed increases. This reduces hull drag and allows higher speeds with relatively low power compared with non-foil boards.

A typical efoil setup includes a board deck, a vertical mast, a fuselage and foil assembly consisting of a front wing and stabilizers below the water, and an electric propulsion unit. The motor drives a propeller or ducted fan housed in the fuselage, powered by a rechargeable battery. The system is controlled via a wireless remote or integrated throttle, with electronic safeguards for power and cut-off.

Operation and performance: Riders accelerate from rest using the handheld controller. As thrust increases, the hydrofoil generates lift, raising the board above the water. Steering is accomplished by weight shifting and by aligning the foil with a rudder or differential thrust. Typical top speeds are in the 25–35 mph (40–56 km/h) range, and range is constrained by battery capacity, weather, and rider weight, often providing 10–40 miles per charge in practical use. Charging times vary by battery and charger.

Safety and market context: Efoils have grown as a niche in watersports and are sold by several manufacturers worldwide. Users are advised to wear personal protective equipment, observe local laws and waterway rules, and practice in designated areas.
