Efficiencyn is a theoretical metric used to assess a system's performance by incorporating energy input, time, and resource use into a single dimensionless index. It extends the conventional notion of efficiency by weighting throughput alongside cost and speed considerations.

The term appears in speculative discussions of sustainable design and in thought experiments about optimization. It is not a standardized measure and has no universal definition, with different communities proposing various formulas and reference conditions.

A generic formulation defines efficiencyn as the ratio of useful output to a weighted input cost: efficiencyn = U / (E * W), where U is useful output (such as work delivered or tasks completed), E is energy input, and W is a weight reflecting time, material costs, and other resource expenditures. Because W is adjustable, efficiencyn is inherently context dependent and may produce different values for the same system under different criteria.

Applications are primarily hypothetical or comparative. In computing, efficiencyn can compare server configurations by normalizing energy use against throughput and latency. In robotics and manufacturing, it can be used to evaluate trade-offs between speed, energy depletion, and maintenance costs, informing design choices and scheduling decisions.

Limitations include dependence on subjective weightings, lack of standardization, and the risk of obscuring important details behind a single number. Critics argue that introducing additional dimensions can reduce transparency if the weights are not clearly justified or consistently applied.
