Editorializing is the act of injecting the writer’s own opinions, beliefs, or value judgments into writing that is intended to be objective or factual. It occurs when subjective interpretation is presented as if it were neutral analysis, or when the framing, tone, or selection of facts signals a particular stance rather than a balanced account.

In journalism, editorializing is typically distinguished from explicit opinion writing. News reporting aims to describe events and verify information, while editorials, columns, and op-eds openly express viewpoints. However, editorializing can seep into news copy through loaded language, selective fact presentation, under- or over-emphasizing certain aspects, or framing issues in a way that pushes readers toward a judgment.

Ethical considerations emphasize clear separation between fact and opinion. Many organizations maintain policies that reserve opinion for dedicated sections or pages, such as editorials or opinion columns, to preserve credibility and reader trust. When editorializing occurs in supposedly neutral material, it can confuse readers, undermine perceived objectivity, and contribute to polarization.

Critics argue that some level of interpretation is inevitable in reporting, since journalists must make sense of events. Proponents of strict neutrality contend that minimizing editorializing enhances accuracy and fairness. In practice, readers often rely on conventions that distinguish straight news from opinion content, and on transparent labeling to prevent misinterpretation.
