edilmesi

Edilmesi is a Turkish grammatical term that refers to the noun-like form derived from edilmek, the passive form of etmek (to do). The word conveys the idea of “the act of being done” or “the doing” and is used to refer to processes or events rather than a specific instance of action.

Morphology and function: Edilmesi is formed from the passive stem edil- and the nominalizing suffix -mesi (or -ması), creating a non-finite noun phrase that denotes an act or process. It can function as a subject or object within a sentence and can be modified or combined with relative clauses (for example, edilmesi gereken …, meaning “that must be done”). The form itself does not carry tense; it represents the act of being done in a general sense.

Usage: Edilmesi is common in formal, bureaucratic, or instructional Turkish, especially in contexts discussing obligations, procedures, or descriptions of processes. While agak common alternatives such as yapılması (the act of doing) exist, edilmesi appears in places where the emphasis is on the passive aspect of the action or on the process itself rather than who performs the action.
