Ecseteléssel is the Hungarian term for applying substances with a brush, and is used to describe a method in which a brush is the primary tool for spreading color, varnish, glue, or other coatings over a surface. The word combines ecset (brush) with the instrumental suffix -eléssel, indicating the means by which something is done.

In visual arts, ecsetelés refers to brushwork: the control of brush loading, stroke direction and pressure, and the texture created by different bristle types and techniques such as washes, dry brushing, glazing, stippling, or impasto. It is central to painting styles and determines tonal blending, edge definition, and surface character.

Common materials include brushes with natural or synthetic bristles, handles made of wood or plastic, paints or coatings such as oils, acrylics, watercolors, varnishes, or stain. Surface preparation and drying times affect the result. Proper cleaning extends brush life; different cleaning methods apply to water-based versus solvent-based media.

Outside fine art, ecseteléssel is used for finishing wooden objects, furniture, or architectural surfaces by applying paint, varnish, lacquer, or wax with a brush.
