In audio, dynamic range limitations describe the difference between the quietest and loudest sounds that can be captured or reproduced by a device. For instance, a microphone or a digital audio converter has a finite dynamic range. If a sound is too quiet, it may be lost in the noise floor. If a sound is too loud, it can cause clipping and distortion. Understanding these limitations is crucial for achieving high-quality audio recordings and playback.

In digital imaging, dynamic range limitations relate to the ability of a camera sensor or display to capture or show detail in both the brightest highlights and the darkest shadows of a scene simultaneously. Sensors have a maximum amount of light they can record before becoming saturated, and a minimum level below which signal is indistinguishable from noise. Similarly, displays have limits on their brightness and black levels. Scenes with very high contrast, like a bright sunset over a dark landscape, can push these limitations.
