Drivebelts, also known as V-belts or transmission belts, are flexible bands used in machinery to transmit rotational power from one pulley to another. The basic principle involves the friction between the belt and the pulleys. As the driving pulley rotates, it grips the belt, causing it to move. This motion is then transferred to the driven pulley, which in turn rotates.

There are several types of drivebelts, each designed for specific purposes. The most common is the V-belt, characterized by its trapezoidal cross-section, which fits into a corresponding groove in the pulley. This shape increases the surface area in contact with the pulley, leading to better grip and power transmission efficiency. Other types include flat belts, which are older but still used in some low-power applications, and synchronous belts, also known as timing belts, which have teeth that mesh with corresponding grooves on the pulleys, ensuring precise synchronization of motion.

The material of a drivebelt is crucial for its performance and longevity. Common materials include rubber, neoprene, polyurethane, and sometimes reinforced with materials like fiberglass or steel cords for added strength and durability. The tension of the drivebelt is also critical. If too loose, it can slip, leading to power loss and accelerated wear. If too tight, it can put excessive strain on bearings and the belt itself, leading to premature failure. Regular inspection and maintenance are essential to ensure proper functioning and to prevent unexpected breakdowns.
