A dressmaker is a craftsman who designs, constructs, and fits dresses and other garments, typically working to a client's measurements. They may create one-of-a-kind pieces from start to finish, or perform alterations and repairs to existing garments.

Duties include taking measurements, creating or adjusting patterns, selecting fabrics, cutting and sewing fabric, assembling garments, fittings, and finishing touches such as hems and closures. Dressmakers use hand sewing as well as machine sewing, and may work with fabrics ranging from lightweight silks to heavy satins.

In practice, the term can overlap with seamstress or tailor, but distinctions exist. A dressmaker often specializes in women's dresses and custom-made garments, focusing on fit and design for individual clients; a seamstress may work primarily by following patterns for assembly, and a tailor tends to work on fitted menswear and complex alterations.

Training and career paths vary. Some dressmakers learn through apprenticeships or vocational programs, while others acquire skills in fashion schools or through on-the-job experience. Building a portfolio of designs and successful fittings is essential for attracting clients.

Historically, dressmakers operated small workshops or home studios and played a central role in garment production before mass tailoring and ready-to-wear. Today, many dressmakers operate independently or in studios, including bridal specialists and alterations shops.
