Doublespeak is language that deliberately uses words or phrases that are ambiguous, euphemistic, or misleading. Its purpose is often to obscure or distort the truth, making unpleasant facts sound more palatable or to present a positive image when the reality is negative. This can manifest in various forms, including the use of jargon, vague terminology, or invented words.

The concept of doublespeak gained prominence through George Orwell's dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. In the novel, "Newspeak" is a controlled language designed to narrow the range of thought and make it literally impossible to conceive of rebellious ideas. While Orwell's Newspeak is a fictional extreme, the term "doublespeak" is widely used to describe real-world instances of deceptive language.

Examples of doublespeak can be found in political discourse, corporate communications, and advertising. For instance, a company might refer to layoffs as "rightsizing" or "downsizing." Military actions might be described as "collateral damage" instead of civilian casualties. The intention is to soften the impact of the words and avoid negative connotations. Critics argue that doublespeak undermines clear communication and erodes public trust, as it suggests an attempt to manipulate or deceive the audience. Identifying doublespeak requires careful attention to the context and intent behind the language used.
