Dorsalfacing is an anatomical and descriptive term used to indicate that a surface, feature, or structure is oriented toward the dorsal (back) side of an organism or object with a defined dorsal–ventral axis. When something is dorsally facing, it presents or points toward the back or upper side rather than the underside (ventral side).

In human and veterinary anatomy, dorsal refers to the back portion of the body or limbs. The dorsal surface of a limb, for example, is the back-facing surface, such as the back of the hand or the top of the foot. In zoology and paleontology, dorsalfacing is used to describe the orientation of features on the back surface of animals, such as the carapace of a turtle or the dorsal fin of a fish. In arthropods and other invertebrates, dorsalfacing surfaces may be described relative to the organism’s overall body plan.

Dorsalfacing is often contrasted with ventral-facing, which describes orientation toward the ventral (belly or underside) side. In imaging, dissection, anatomy, and comparative morphology, explicit dorsalfacing or ventral-facing labels help clarify which surface or edge is being referred to, particularly when the subject’s position or orientation varies.

Etymology: the term combines the Latin dorsalis (of the back) with facing, reflecting its directional meaning across anatomical and morphological contexts.
