Dormitis is a medical term referring to inflammation of the skin or mucous membranes in the genital area, most commonly affecting the foreskin and glans penis in males. The condition is characterized by redness, swelling, pain, and sometimes discharge from the affected area.

The primary cause of dormitis is usually bacterial or fungal infection, with common pathogens including Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus species, and Candida albicans. Poor hygiene, diabetes, immunosuppression, and sexual activity can increase the risk of developing this condition. In some cases, allergic reactions to soaps, detergents, or latex products may also trigger dormitis.

Symptoms typically include tenderness, itching, burning sensation, and visible inflammation of the genital tissues. Patients may experience difficulty retracting the foreskin if swelling is severe, and there may be an unpleasant odor or abnormal discharge present.

Diagnosis is generally made through physical examination by a healthcare provider, who may also take swab samples for laboratory analysis to identify the specific causative organism. This helps determine the most appropriate treatment approach.

Treatment typically involves maintaining proper hygiene and using topical antimicrobial or antifungal medications depending on the underlying cause.
