A donutchart, also known as a ring chart or annular chart, is a data visualization that resembles a pie chart but with a hole in the center. It is composed of a circular ring divided into sectors, where each sector represents a proportion of the whole. The size of each sector is proportional to the quantity it represents. Like a pie chart, the entire ring represents 100% of the data.

The primary advantage of a donutchart over a standard pie chart is the space in the center. This central area can be used to display additional information, such as a total value, a label, or an icon, which can enhance the overall understanding of the data presented. This feature can also make it easier to compare different categories, especially when there are many slices, as the inner hole can reduce visual clutter.

Donutcharts are best suited for displaying categorical data that shows the proportion of a whole. They are effective when the number of categories is relatively small, typically no more than five or six. When used with a large number of categories, the individual slices can become too thin and difficult to distinguish, diminishing the chart's clarity. The interpretation of donutcharts relies on the visual comparison of the arc lengths of the sectors.
