During domstolsförhandlingens, the parties present their claims and evidence face to face with the court. In criminal cases, the prosecution and the defense make oral statements, examine and cross-examine witnesses and experts, and submit documentary evidence. In civil cases, the plaintiff and the defendant present arguments and evidence to support their positions. In certain cases, lay judges or other court participants may join the panel, depending on the type of matter and the court.

The proceedings are typically led by a presiding judge, assisted by clerks and, when applicable, lay judges. The judge directs the examination of witnesses, assesses the relevance and credibility of evidence, and ensures that the procedure complies with procedural rules and rights of the parties. Public access is a common feature, subject to exceptions for privacy or sensitive matters. A court transcript, or protocol, records what is said and decided.

The outcome of domstolsförhandlingens is a verdict or judgement, which may be delivered at the end of the hearing or subsequently in writing. Decisions may be appealed to higher courts, such as an appellate court and, with permission, further to the Supreme Court.
