The term originates from the game of dominoes, where one tile falling can set off a line of tiles to tumble. In physics the phenomenon is often associated with the propagation of disturbances through a medium, such as shock waves or mechanical vibrations. When a single element in a system experiences a change, the change can be transmitted to neighbouring elements, creating a cascading reaction that can amplify or spread across an entire network.

The concept is widely applied beyond the physical sciences. In economics, a domino effect may describe how the failure of one major company can ripple through supply chains, affecting suppliers, distributors and customers. The 2008 global financial crisis is frequently cited as a domino-like collapse wherein problems in mortgage-backed securities triggered losses in banks, leading to a contraction of credit markets worldwide. In geopolitics, a tactical military victory can set off a series of retaliatory actions, a pattern that analysts call “domino politics”. The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 triggered the rapid collapse of communist regimes across Eastern Europe, showcasing a domino effect in a historical context.

Domino effecten are also encountered in environmental science. Climate change can trigger glacial melt, which in turn raises sea levels, increases flooding, and forces human migration. In biology, the removal of a keystone species can destabilise entire ecosystems, initiating further extinctions or invasions. Psychologically, a single negative event can initiate a chain of mood changes affecting a social group.
