Dissensions are pronounced disagreements within a group that can undermine cohesion and hinder collective action. They arise when members reject or contest proposed policies, leadership, or doctrinal interpretations. The term comes from Latin dissensus, meaning disagreement.

Causes include ideological differences, power struggles, strategic disagreements, personality conflicts, and external pressures. Dissensions appear in political parties, legislatures, religious bodies, trade unions, and corporate boards, often when competing factions seek influence or reflect regional, ideological, or constituent differences.

Consequences vary: they can weaken governance, slow decision-making, and provoke leadership changes or formal splits. In some cases, dissensions prompt reform, increased minority rights, or more inclusive decision processes; in others, they produce lasting fragmentation or decline.

Resolution methods include negotiation, mediation, compromise, formal votes, and realignment of factions. Institutions may adopt rules, codes of conduct, or structured decision procedures to manage dissent and preserve functionality. In research contexts, dissension is studied as a dimension of intra-group conflict, often distinguished from mere disagreement by its intensity and organizational impact.
