Diskdetainerlås, or disk detainer lock, is a type of mechanical lock that uses a stack of circular disks called detainers arranged along a central axis. Each detainer has a notch or groove on its edge, and the key carries matching notches or raised segments. When the correct key is inserted, the notches lift or position the detainers so that all notches align at a single shear plane, allowing a sidebar or driving mechanism to retract and the plug to rotate.

Construction and operation: The lock body contains a row of detainers, each mounted in a spring-loaded cage. The key’s notches raise selected portions of the detainers to the precise heights required for alignment. If all detainers align correctly, a sidebar or drive element can engage a lock interface and permit turning the plug. If any detainer is misaligned, the sidebar cannot retract and the lock remains secured.

Security considerations: Disk detainer locks are valued for resistance to many conventional picks that work on pin-tumbler systems. However, they are not immune to specialized picking tools and techniques. Security relies on the number of detainers, precise tolerances, and anti-pick features such as false notches, irregular disc heights, and hardened components. Quality manufacturing and proper key control significantly affect actual security.

Applications: Disk detainer locks are used in padlocks, cabinet and door cylinders, and some safes. Abloy and other manufacturers have developed disk-detainer products marketed as high-security solutions. The technology emphasizes durability and resistance to wear, making it common in commercial and security-conscious settings.
