Quantization then assigns a discrete value from a finite set of possibilities to each sampled value. This process is fundamental to the digitization of audio, video, and other analog information.

Discretization also plays a role in computer graphics, where continuous geometric shapes are represented by a collection of discrete points or polygons. This allows for their manipulation and rendering on digital displays. In machine learning, continuous features are often discretized to make them suitable for certain algorithms, such as decision trees.
