Discontinuitatea is the Romanian term used in mathematics to describe a point at which a function is not continuous. Precisely, a function f defined on an interval is continuous at a point a if the limit of f(x) as x approaches a equals f(a). When this condition fails, a is a point of discontinuitatea.

Discontinuitatea can be classified into several types. A removable discontinuity occurs when the limit as x approaches a exists but is not equal to f(a), or when f(a) is not defined; redefining f(a) to the limit value restores continuity. A jump discontinuity occurs when the left-hand and right-hand limits exist but are not equal. An infinite (or unbounded) discontinuity occurs when at least one one-sided limit has infinite magnitude, often accompanied by a vertical asymptote. An oscillatory discontinuity occurs when limits do not exist due to persistent oscillation.

Examples help illustrate. For a removable discontinuity, consider f(x) = (x^2 - 1)/(x - 1) for x ≠ 1 and f(1) = 0; the limit as x → 1 is 2, so there is a removable discontinuity at x = 1. A jump discontinuity can be shown by f(x) = 0 for x < 0 and f(x) = 1 for x ≥ 0, which has a jump at x = 0. An infinite discontinuity can be demonstrated by f(x) = 1/x for x ≠ 0 and f(0) = 0; as x → 0, the values diverge to ±∞. An oscillatory discontinuity is exhibited by f(x) = sin(1/x) for x ≠ 0 and f(0) = 0, where the limit at x = 0 does not exist due to oscillation.

Discontinuitatea matters in analysis and applications. It influences integrability, the existence of derivatives, and the behavior of numerical methods; it also informs the study of function spaces and Fourier analysis.
