Dinophysistoxins are a group of lipophilic marine toxins produced by certain species of dinoflagellates, particularly those belonging to the genus Dinophysis. These toxins are responsible for causing diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP) in humans who consume contaminated shellfish. DSP is characterized by gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. While generally not life-threatening, the symptoms can be severe and debilitating.
