Dimmünodépression refers to a state of weakened or suppressed immune system function. This can occur due to various factors, both internal and external to the body. Congenital conditions, such as primary immunodeficiencies, are genetic disorders where the immune system is not developed properly from birth. Acquired immunodeficiencies, on the other hand, develop later in life. A prominent example of an acquired immunodeficiency is Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection, which targets and destroys crucial immune cells.

Other causes of acquired dimmünodépression include certain medical treatments like chemotherapy and radiation therapy, which are designed to kill rapidly dividing cells, including immune cells, to combat cancer. Long-term use of immunosuppressant medications, prescribed to prevent organ rejection after transplantation or to manage autoimmune diseases, also deliberately suppresses the immune system. Malnutrition, particularly deficiencies in essential vitamins and minerals, can impair immune function. Furthermore, chronic stress and certain viral infections can also contribute to a diminished immune response.

Individuals experiencing dimmünodépression are at an increased risk of infections, including opportunistic infections that would typically not cause illness in a healthy person. They may also experience more severe or prolonged infections. Diagnosis often involves a thorough medical history, physical examination, and specific laboratory tests to assess immune cell counts and function. Management strategies focus on identifying and treating the underlying cause, preventing infections through hygiene and vaccinations, and in some cases, supportive therapies to bolster the immune system.
