Dimlichten, in Dutch road terminology, refers to the use of low-beam headlights (also called dipped headlights). They illuminate the road ahead while directing light downward to avoid dazzling oncoming traffic. Dimlichten contrast with high beams (hooglichten) and with fog lights (mistlampen).

Dimlichten voeren is intended to improve visibility for the driver and to increase the vehicle’s conspicuity to other road users in conditions with limited daylight or reduced visibility. Common situations include twilight (dawn and dusk), rain, fog, snow, and driving through tunnels. In these conditions, standard headlights provide adequate illumination without creating excessive glare for others.

Legal requirements vary by country. In the Netherlands, as in many European countries, drivers are required to use dimmed headlights when visibility is insufficient or daylight is low. Daytime running lights may be present on many modern cars, but they do not always substitute for dimmed headlights in poor conditions. Some vehicles have automatic headlights that switch to the appropriate setting, including dimmed mode, when needed.

Safety and maintenance: Regularly check that dimmed headlights are functioning and correctly aimed, keep lenses clean, and replace bulbs when needed. When conditions clearly require it, adhere to the local rule to keep headlights on, and remember that high beams should be used only when there is no risk of glare to other road users.
