Diffuusiohitsaus, known in English as diffusion bonding or diffusion welding, is a solid-state joining process used to bond materials together. It operates by placing clean surfaces of the materials in intimate contact and applying heat and pressure. The process relies on the atomic diffusion of atoms across the interface between the two materials, which eventually leads to a permanent bond.

The key principle behind diffusion bonding is that at elevated temperatures, atoms within the materials gain enough energy to move from their positions in the crystal lattice. When the surfaces are brought into close contact, these mobile atoms can migrate across the interface, effectively intermingling and forming metallic bonds. This process typically occurs below the melting point of the base materials to prevent the formation of liquid phases, thus maintaining the solid-state nature of the weld.
