Diffraktiokuviossa refers to the pattern observed when waves, such as light or sound, encounter an obstacle or opening. This phenomenon, known as diffraction, causes the waves to spread out and interfere with each other, creating a characteristic pattern of alternating bright and dark fringes (for light) or high and low intensity regions (for sound). The specific arrangement and spacing of these fringes are directly related to the wavelength of the wave and the size and shape of the diffracting object or aperture.

When light passes through a narrow slit, for example, it diffracts and produces a pattern on a screen that consists of a central bright band flanked by a series of dimmer bands. The width of the central band is inversely proportional to the width of the slit; a narrower slit produces a wider pattern. Similarly, if light passes through a circular aperture, a central bright spot surrounded by concentric rings of alternating darkness and brightness is observed. This is known as the Airy disk pattern.

Diffraction effects are more pronounced when the size of the obstacle or aperture is comparable to the wavelength of the wave. This is why diffraction is readily observed with visible light, whose wavelengths are on the order of hundreds of nanometers, but is less apparent with macroscopic objects.
