Diferentiaatorit is the Estonian term for a differentiator, a device or system that outputs a signal proportional to the rate of change of its input over time. In mathematics, the differentiator is the differential operator, commonly denoted d/dt or D, which maps a function to its derivative and expresses concepts such as instantaneous rate of change and slope. Functional properties include linearity (D(af + bg) = aDf + bDg) and rules like the product and chain rules, which underpin many areas of physics and engineering.

In electronics, a differentiator is a circuit that produces an output proportional to the time derivative of the input signal. There are passive and active implementations. A simple passive differentiator uses a capacitor in series with a resistor to ground, with the output taken across the resistor. Its transfer function is roughly Vout/Vin = sRC/(1 + sRC), which approximates an ideal derivative for frequencies below the circuit’s break frequency (|sRC| ≪ 1). Practical passive differentiators are limited by noise and high-frequency sensitivity, and they require proper bandwidth constraints.

An active differentiator uses an operational amplifier, typically with a capacitor in the input path and a feedback resistor. It can provide higher gain and isolation but remains sensitive to high-frequency noise and DC offsets. Real-world designs often incorporate stabilization elements, such as adding a resistor in series with the input capacitor or a capacitor in parallel with the feedback resistor, to limit gain at extreme frequencies and improve stability.

Applications of diferentiaatorit concepts include edge detection, control systems, waveform shaping, and any scenario requiring the measurement of how quickly a signal changes.
