Diemaking is the design and manufacture of dies—tools used to cut, stamp, emboss, or form materials into specific shapes. Dies are essential in printing, packaging, and manufacturing, converting sheet or web stock such as paper, cardboard, film, leather, or metal into finished parts or products. The field covers tool design, die layout, fabrication, and validation in production.

Common die types include steel-rule dies, which use flexible steel blades in a carrier to cut shapes from sheet stock; flatbed dies, machined on a solid plate for high-precision cutting; rotary dies, mounted on cylinders for continuous feeding; and embossing or debossing dies for patterning. Modern operations often combine cutting, scoring, and kiss-cut features in a single die. Dies may be built from tool steel, carbide, or other alloys, chosen for stock material, volume, and desired tolerances.

Process overview: designers create the dieline from artwork; engineers select the die type and fabricate it using CAD/CAM tools. Prototypes or sample runs verify fit and cutting quality. The tool is then hardened, sharpened, and mounted in a press or converting line. Production runs require careful die maintenance to preserve sharp edges and consistent registration, and periodic refurbishment or replacement as wear occurs.

Applications span packaging (folded cartons, labels, tissue inserts), consumer goods, textiles and leather goods, automotive interiors, and electronics enclosures.
