A diapositiven, often referred to as a slide, is a small transparent sheet typically made of glass or plastic that contains an image. This image is usually a photograph or a piece of artwork. Diapositiven were historically used in a projector to display enlarged images onto a screen for an audience. They were particularly popular for presentations, educational purposes, and personal photo sharing before the advent of digital projection technology.

The process of creating diapositiven typically involved photography. A camera would capture an image on photographic film, and then this film would be developed and cut into individual frames. These frames, if intended to be slides, would then be mounted in a cardboard or plastic frame, often with a glass cover to protect the film. The mounting also ensured the slide could be easily handled and inserted into a projector.

When a diapositiven is placed in a slide projector, a bright light source shines through the transparent image. A lens then magnifies this projected image and focuses it onto a screen. The color and detail of the original image are reproduced on the screen. Diapositiven were a significant medium for visual communication for many decades, offering a way to share experiences and information in a vivid and engaging manner. While largely superseded by digital alternatives, they remain a part of photographic history.
