There are two primary types, Type I and Type II. Type I diamonds contain measurable amounts of nitrogen atoms, which are present as single atoms or in pairs within the crystal lattice. This nitrogen causes the diamond to absorb ultraviolet light and often imparts a yellowish or brownish hue. Type I diamonds are further subdivided into Type Ia and Type Ib. Type Ia diamonds have nitrogen atoms clustered in pairs, which is the most common form of diamond. Type Ib diamonds have nitrogen atoms as single substitutional atoms, which is much rarer and often results in a more intense yellow or canary color.

Type II diamonds, in contrast, have virtually no detectable nitrogen impurities. Their purity allows them to transmit ultraviolet light more readily. Type II diamonds are further classified into Type IIa and Type IIb. Type IIa diamonds are extremely rare and are the purest form of diamond, often colorless. Type IIb diamonds, while also rare, contain boron impurities instead of nitrogen. These boron atoms can act as a p-type semiconductor, leading to their characteristic blue or gray color and making them valuable for electronic applications.
