Diagenesis refers to all physical, chemical, and biological changes that happen to sediment after it is deposited but before it is subjected to metamorphism. Replacement is a process where one mineral is altered into another. Biological activity, such as the action of microorganisms, also plays a role in early diagenesis by affecting the pore water chemistry and mineral transformations.

The extent and type of diagenetic changes are influenced by factors such as the original sediment composition, the burial depth and temperature, the chemistry of the pore fluids, and the time available for diagenesis. Diagenesis is a crucial process in the formation of sedimentary rocks and plays a significant role in the subsurface reservoirs of oil, gas, and groundwater.
