diafragmaslijtage

Diafragmaslijtage is not a standard term in medical Dutch. In clinical practice the diaphragm's pathology is usually described as a diaphragmatic hernia (diafragmatische herniatie) or as diaphragmatic dysfunction or weakness. The phrase may be encountered as a nonstandard way to refer to diaphragmatic defects or to wear of diaphragmatic tissue, but its meaning should be clarified in context.

If the term refers to diaphragmatic herniation, abdominal contents protrude into the thoracic cavity through a defect in the diaphragm. It can be congenital or result from trauma or from sustained increased intra-abdominal pressure, such as severe coughing, pregnancy, or obesity. Symptoms depend on the size and organs involved and can include chest pain, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, or signs of bowel obstruction. Diagnosis typically uses imaging—chest X-ray, ultrasound in some cases, and computed tomography for detailed assessment. Treatment frequently requires surgical repair of the diaphragmatic defect, with approaches chosen from abdominal or thoracic routes, aiming to reposition organs and restore diaphragm integrity. Incarceration or strangulation of herniated contents is a possible complication.

Diaphragmatic wear or degeneration is a less well-defined concept, sometimes mentioned in discussions of aging or chronic mechanical strain, that may contribute to weakening of the muscle and predispose to herniation in some individuals. However, this is not a widely recognized separate disease. When diaphragmatic pathology is suspected, clinical notes should specify whether a hernia, weakness, or other dysfunction is meant, to guide appropriate management.
