Dhélicoptères are rotary-wing aircraft designed for vertical takeoff and landing, hovering, and rapid maneuvering. They achieve lift with one or more rotating blades driven by an propulsion system, typically a piston engine or turbine. Most conventional configurations use a single main rotor and a tail rotor to counteract torque, though alternative layouts such as coaxial or tandem rotors exist.

The term in French is hélicoptère, while the English word helicopter comes from Greek roots meaning “spiral wing.” In practice, dhélicoptères encompass a wide range of rotorcraft, from light training models to heavy military transports, and may employ different rotor systems, control methods, and materials.

Key design features include the cyclic and collective pitch controls that alter rotor blade angle to steer and change lift, and anti-torque systems to counter engine torque. Modern examples may use four- or six-blade rotors, composite materials, and advanced avionics. Some rotorcraft use alternative anti-torque concepts such as fenestron (enclosed tail rotors) or NOTAR systems, and a few employ coaxial or intermeshing rotors to reduce footprint or noise.

Applications span civil and military domains. Civil uses include transportation to remote locations, search and rescue, medical evacuation, fire response, law enforcement, offshore support, and aerial surveying. Military roles cover troop and cargo transport, reconnaissance, and special operations. Safety and regulation are governed by aviation authorities through certification of airframes, engines, and pilots, along with ongoing maintenance requirements and flight training.

Recent trends focus on performance, efficiency, and safety, with lightweight composites, fly-by-wire controls, hybrid or electric propulsion, and growing interest in autonomous or remotely piloted rotorcraft.
