Detrusor refers to the smooth muscle layer within the urinary bladder responsible for contracting and relaxing to facilitate the storage and release of urine. It is a key component of the urinary system, working in conjunction with the bladder and urethra to maintain normal bladder function.

The detrusor muscle is composed of striated and smooth muscle fibers. The striated muscles are responsible for contracting and expelling urine during urination, while the smooth muscles help to regulate bladder pressure and elasticity. During periods of inactivity, the detrusor muscle relaxes, allowing the bladder to expand and store additional urine.

Detrusor overactivity occurs when the muscle contracts involuntarily, resulting in symptoms such as urgency, frequency, and incontinence. Conversely, detrusor underactivity can lead to symptoms of urinary retention. Both of these conditions can be treated with medical interventions, lifestyle modifications, or therapeutic interventions, depending on the underlying cause.

Prolonged pelvic floor disorders, spinal cord injuries, and neurogenic bladder can all impact detrusor muscle function, resulting in abnormal bladder behavior. Detrusor function is also affected by factors such as hydronephrosis, bladder wall thickness, and the strength of pelvic floor muscles.

Physiotherapy, pelvic floor exercises, and training programs have been developed to strengthen the detrusor muscle and restore normal bladder function in individuals experiencing urinary issues. However, the effectiveness of these interventions can depend on a variety of underlying factors, including the severity of the condition, age, and overall physical health. Research continues to explore new treatments for detrusor-related issues and to improve our understanding of detrusor function and regulation.
