Detrivoroj, also known as detritivores, are heterotrophic organisms that consume detritus. Detritus refers to any organic material that has died, such as dead plants, dead animals, and feces. Detritivores play a crucial role in ecosystems by breaking down dead organic matter, returning nutrients to the soil and water, and preventing the accumulation of waste. This process is a vital part of nutrient cycling.

The classification of detritivores can be broad. They are often grouped by the size of the detritus they consume. In terrestrial ecosystems, earthworms are a classic example, aerating the soil and decomposing leaf litter. Fungi and bacteria are the ultimate decomposers, breaking down even the most resistant organic compounds, making essential elements available for producers like plants to utilize. Without detritivores, ecosystems would be clogged with dead organic material, and nutrient availability would be severely limited, hindering the growth of new life.
